Cyclist killed after colliding with truck at geelong beach

Holland's first fatality in four months after a head-on collision with a transport truck last month has been confirmed as 32-year-old James Watson.

Mr Watson, who worked for the Victorian State Government, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene of the collision on Monday evening after he sustained injuries to the neck.

The collision, on Saturday at Geelong Beach, left eight people injured.

The death was confirmed by Deputy Premier Troy Grant's spokeswoman, Sarah Brown.

The deputy premier said the incident was a tragic one, adding the tragedy of Mr Watson's death was one which everyone should feel deeply about.

"James was a dedicated community officer who left a legacy for this state," Ms Brown said.

"His death is a crushing loss for Geelong residents that will be felt for the foreseeable future, particularly in the wake of the ongoing police investigations into Saturday's incident."

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; a three-month-old son and two-year-old daughter and the four family pets.

The Victorian Department of Health said in a statement that James was "not expected to be able to walk again in his younger years".

The Department is offering tributes to Mr Watson on its Facebook page, including an opportunity to apply for a medal if you recognized his bravery in last year's tragic Geelong tragedy.

As I write this, my local taxi and limousine company has just finished its annual performance review. You probably know this already as it's been a big part of the news since I published the story a week and a half ago.

I have no idea who will be winning that year-end review, but I do know this: my company, Mylan, may lose $800 million to $1.2 billion. That's what it costs to do a $1.3-billion merger.

The deal took place almost four years ago, when the company was still Aetna. But in terms of the terms of that deal, the deal wasn't nearly as risky as it might seem. Aetna already had an awful reputation, and there was little reason to believe that buying Mylan would fix that.

It didn't. A few months after that merger was approved, I wrote a post titled "The 'Health Insurance' Big Mac." At first, I had it entirely off my mind. It was obvious that the health-care system was, in part, a giant insurance scheme. Aetna was only one part of it, of course, but I didn't think much about it — until it all changed. I noticed that the numbers I was following didn't add up.

I wrote again, pointing out that the overall health-care costs were rising by a factor of eight and the private-insurance price of a plan doubled after the merger. And it was also beginning to become clear that Aetna was not going to have any real competition for its remaining competitors under this deal.

It was just too much to take. So I gave up on this sort of thing. When the merger was approved, I turned my back on it and moved on to a new career in the industry, which took me to Canada. Here I still am, but now I work in a very different industry (hospitality) where I have access to a lot of information.

I wrote more about my situation in the comments section below, but now I've found a pretty good replacement for my health news piece — and it's probably worth it, considering that the insurance company is now a very small company that is struggling to stay relevant, and that the merger was a huge hit.
